- As a payment instrument the future of the cheque is uncertain. It was excluded from the EU Payment Services Directive and is not part of SEPA (The Single Euro Payments Area)
- The Cheque Guarantee Card Scheme in the Republic of Ireland closed on December 31st, 2011
