Cheques are a long established form of payment, still popular in Ireland but not in most other European countries. Being a paper form of payment, cheques require several stages of physical transportation and manual processing. Because of this, cheques tend to be more costly and less environment friendly than their more modern counterparts such as electronic payments, direct debits and card payments. Cheque usage in Ireland in recent years has begun to decline and as Irish society embraces more modern electronic payment alternatives, it is likely that cheque usage will continue to decline further.
