What is a Payment Card?

A payment card is a plastic card which can be presented by a cardholder in a shop or to a retailer in order to make a payment. The card is normally linked to a payment account. When a transaction is processed the sale amount is credited to the retailer’s bank account and debited from the cardholder’s payment account.

Payment cards include pre-paid cards (‘pay up-front’), debit cards (‘pay now’) and credit cards (‘pay later’). Please click here for a detailed description of each.
